Synod of Jerusalem (1672)

Date
1672
Place
Jerusalem and Bethlehem (Church of the Nativity)

What it decided

Rejected the Calvinist doctrines of the Confession attributed to Patriarch Cyril Lucaris (published 1629). The Confession of Dositheus, with 18 decrees and 4 questions, affirms the authority of tradition alongside Scripture, the necessity of faith working through love in justification, the seven mysteries (sacraments), the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist using the term metousiosis, the canonicity of several deuterocanonical books, and the procession of the Spirit from the Father alone.

Convoked by
Dositheos II, Patriarch of Jerusalem

Who recognises it

Not an ecumenical council; a local Orthodox synod whose Confession of Dositheus has been widely received as an authoritative statement of Orthodox faith in response to the Reformation.
