Who he was
Patriarch of Alexandria and the chief opponent of Nestorius, whose theology of the union of divinity and humanity in the one person of the Word dominated the Council of Ephesus (431). He is a shared authority for Chalcedonians and Oriental Orthodox, who read his formula "one incarnate nature of God the Word" differently.
