Who he was
A former prefect of Rome who became a monk and was elected bishop of Rome in 590, in an Italy hit by plague and Lombard invasion. His Pastoral Rule became a classic handbook for bishops, he sent Augustine of Canterbury's mission to England (596), and his work marks the transition from Antiquity to the Latin Middle Ages.
