Who he was
A rhetorician born in Thagaste, converted in Milan in 386 and bishop of Hippo from 395/396, he is the most influential Latin author of Christian antiquity. His writings against the Manichaeans, Donatists and Pelagians shaped Western theology of grace, the Church and the sacraments, and were invoked by Catholics and Reformers alike.
