Who he was
A Christian official in the administration of the Umayyad caliphate in Damascus who became a monk at the Mar Saba monastery near Jerusalem. He defended the veneration of images against Byzantine iconoclasm, and his Exposition of the Orthodox Faith synthesized Greek patristic theology; he is often regarded as the last of the Church Fathers.
