Who he was
A preacher from Antioch, nicknamed "Golden Mouth" (Chrysostom), chosen archbishop of Constantinople in 398. His criticism of court luxury and conflicts with Theophilus of Alexandria led to his deposition and exile, where he died in 407; the main Byzantine liturgy bears his name.
