Synod of Dort
- Date
- 1618–1619
- Place
- Dordrecht, Dutch Republic (Netherlands)
What it decided
From 13 November 1618 to 29 May 1619, with delegates from England, Scotland, the Palatinate, Switzerland and other territories. It answered the five articles of the Remonstrants (Arminians, 1610) with the Canons of Dort, in five heads of doctrine on unconditional election, the extent of the atonement, human corruption, effectual grace and the perseverance of the saints (the basis of the later English acronym TULIP). It removed Remonstrant ministers, confirmed the Belgic Confession and the Heidelberg Catechism, and commissioned a new Dutch Bible translation (Statenvertaling).
- Convoked by
- The States General of the Dutch Republic
Who recognises it
Not an ecumenical council. A national synod of the Dutch Reformed Church with delegates from other Reformed churches; its Canons are one of the “Three Forms of Unity” of the continental Reformed churches.
