What it decided

Presided over by Cyril of Alexandria, it deposed Nestorius, bishop of Constantinople, and approved Cyril's second letter to Nestorius as agreeing with Nicaea. It confessed that the Word united flesh to himself in one person, so that Mary is Theotokos (“God-bearer, Mother of God”). Canon 7 forbade composing a creed other than that of Nicaea, and other canons condemned Caelestius and the Pelagians. The Antiochene bishops under John of Antioch held a rival assembly; reconciliation came with the Formula of Reunion of 433.
