What it decided

Meeting on 25 and 30 May 419 with 217 bishops, it compiled the Code of Canons of the African Church (138 canons in Latin, 135 in Greek) from earlier councils, repeating the list of canonical books. It also handled the case of the presbyter Apiarius, who had appealed to Rome, and defended the African bishops' right to settle their own cases without appeals “across the sea.”

Convoked by
Aurelius, bishop of Carthage

Who recognises it

None as an ecumenical council; its canon code was received into Byzantine canon law and confirmed by the Council in Trullo (692).
