What it decided

Annulled the council of 449, deposed Dioscorus and condemned Eutyches. It received Leo's Tome and Cyril's letters and issued the Chalcedonian Definition: one and the same Christ, Son, Lord, “acknowledged in two natures, without confusion, without change, without division, without separation,” concurring in one person (prosopon) and hypostasis. It issued 27 disciplinary canons plus canon 28, which granted Constantinople privileges equal to Rome's as “New Rome”; Pope Leo rejected that canon. Some 350–370 bishops attended (tradition says 630).

Convoked by
Emperor Marcian (with Empress Pulcheria)
