Council of Basel
- Date
- 1431–1449
- Place
- Basel, Switzerland
What it decided
It reasserted the council’s superiority over the pope (conciliarism) and negotiated with the Hussites the Compacts that granted Bohemia communion in both kinds. When Eugene IV transferred it to Ferrara (1437) to negotiate with the Greeks, the majority that stayed in Basel deposed the pope and elected the antipope Felix V (1439); the council dissolved in 1449.
- Convoked by
- Pope Martin V; opened under Eugene IV
Who recognises it
The Catholic Church counts at most its early sessions (to 1437) as ecumenical, as part of the seventeenth council (Basel–Ferrara–Florence); it rejects the later ones.
