What it was
On 21 January 1525 in Zurich, dissenting followers of Zwingli baptized one another as adult believers. The movement held to a church of believers separate from the state, nonviolence and refusal of oaths; Mennonites, Hutterites and the Amish descend from it.
Little known
The first Anabaptist executed by a Protestant authority was Felix Manz, drowned in the Limmat river in Zurich in 1527. The violent Münster episode (1534–1535) was atypical: most of the movement was pacifist.
