Third Council of Toledo

- 589
- Place
- Toledo, Visigothic Spain
What it decided
Sealed the conversion of King Reccared and the Visigothic people from Arianism to the Nicene faith. Presided over by Leander of Seville, with about 72 bishops, it issued 23 canons. The creed it professed said the Holy Spirit proceeds “from the Father and the Son” (Filioque), one of the earliest conciliar uses of the formula, which later became one of the causes of the East–West separation.
